Health Department to conduct spraying for West Nile Virus - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --The Health Department will be spraying areas of Staten Island this week to reduce the risk of the West Nile Virus.

The areas in Staten Island that will see spraying include parts of Castleton Corners, Emerson Hill, Grymes Hill, Manor Heights, Clifton, Sunnyside, Todd Hill and Westerleigh. The zip codes include 10301, 10304, 10310. and 10314.

Trucks will spray pesticide on Wednesday, Sept. 8, between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following morning, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, the application will be delayed until Thursday.

The Health Department said in a press release that the applications will include Anvil, Duet or DeltaGard, and that health risks to people and pets are low.

However, individuals who are sensitive to spray ingredients may experience short-term eye or throat irritation or a rash. People with respiratory conditions may also be affected, according to the Health Department.

The agency warns individuals to stay indoors during the spray, and recommends air conditioners remain on.

After the spraying is complete, the Health Department said individuals should wash their skin and clothing if they were exposed, as well as all fruits and vegetables that are growing outside.
